This is a potential southern Rhone superstar in the form of a tiny Domaine of some 10 hectares owned by the Chevalier family and now run by the youthful and charming Patrice Chevalier, making Cotes du Rhone and Cotes du Rhone Villages. The vineyards are at some 350 meters altitude, South facing above the village of Vaison la Romaine, planted to Syrah, Grenache and a little Viognier. There are 3 distinct “Terroirs”, a limestone/clay soil giving a warm fruitiness to the wines, structure and suppleness from the more clay based soils and finally depth and intensity from the more stoney/clay based soil. Yields are kept down and each parcel is vinified separately and then assembled at the end of the winter following harvest, with the top cuvee remaining up to 12-18 months in oak barrels depending on the style of the vintage. Our offering of the delicious 2007s was only the second vintage of these particular wines, which are very limited in quantity. If this is what to expect so soon after their creation, we should have an exciting series of future vintages to watch out for!
